Ukulele 2013

In Rooms 1 and 3 (year 4-8) we are learning to play the ukulele. We started learning in term 1 this year and so far R1 has learnt a couple of songs including I'm Yours by Jason Mraz and Its a Heartache by Wellington international Ukulele Orchestra. R3 started later than Room 1 and have only completed a couple of little songs like Mary Had a Little Lamb and Happy Birthday.

The senior class in term 1 have created watercolour artwork based on the painter Emily Carr. The aim was to paint realistic yet slightly abstract watercolour paintings of trees without leaves. The students were able to mix the watercolours to make the ideal colour for their paintings and water themdown as much as they wanted. Before painting their trees the students had to draw pencil drafts until they got the perfect tree. They then copied the tree on to eather A3 or A4 art paper, went over the lines in permanent marker before shading in the parts they want whiter in white crayon.

Winter Camp

Fire Safety

Early in term 3 Rooms 1 and 3 headed to the mountains for an alpine experience.

Staying at the Arthur's Pass Outdoor Education Centre the students had the opportunity to hike in the mountains; to view the Devil's Punchbowl Falls; cross a freezing cold river; explore the mountain bush; view the Southern Alps from Porters Skifield and learn to ski or snowboard.

Read the reviews of camp in the 11 August newsletter.

'Our Place' was the focus of our topic learning in term 2.

We looked at what makes our community - the people, places, facilities and services.  As part of this work members of the local fire brigade visited and the students learnt how to be safe around fire.  Room 2 were fortunate to viist the fire station.

We decide to head out and tidy up the lake's foreshore as part of "Clean Up Week".

We were pleasantly surprised that there was slightly less rubbish.

We still found too many bottles and pieces of litter.

Clean Up Moana

This year, Lake Brunner School had nine students qualify for the West Coast Athletics. From Room One, there were three boys who qualified, and from Room Three there were six girls. We did quite well for a small school, with placings in some events. Tasmin Barnett won her discus event - congratulations.

All the students helped to bake goodies for the quiz raffles and prizes. These students helped to decorate the gingerbread houses.

Thanks Mrs Hardie for helping!

Hockey Tournament

On Monday the 28th of July many of the students from Room 3 participated in a hockey tournament in Greymouth.  Our team showed awesome determination, enthusiasm, skills, and they truly played as a team.  We placed 3rd in the tournament, which we were very pleased with. We played 6 games in total, with four wins, and two losses.  Goals for totalled 7 and goals against totalled 3.  We would like to thank the Moana Pub for providing the Pub van, Mrs Rees for driving the van and being an awesome supporter, and Arthur Perkin for devoting his time by training us for the tournament, transporting us on the day, and being a star coach! We had a blast, and look forward to competing in the event next year.

Four students from Room 3, Tasmin Barnett, Riley Perkin, Shaun Rooney and Will Hennah, competed as a team in the West-a-Maths competition held in Hokitika.  There were 18 teams in their division, comprised of schools from all over the West Coast.  Teams had 30 minutes to solve 20 complex maths problems.  Our team placed 4th, with a score of 19 out of 20.  They were actually working on the last question when the clock ran out.  The team was incredibly proud of their result, and all of us here at LBS are also very proud of their achievement.  Congrats to our Mathletes!

Sculpture

Visual Art

In Term three, Lake Brunner School students were learning about sculptural art. All the classes had been creating magnificent clay sculptures, but only Room One and Room Three have learnt about the art of a British sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. Andy is what we would call an environmental sculptor. In his sculptures he only uses natural materials from the environment, and he even crafts his marvellous pieces outdoors! Andy Goldsworthy inspired the classes to do our very best when designing and creating our art work. We had fifteen minutes to gather materials and twenty minutes to create our masterpieces. Check out our awesome pics of our creative art works!

Pet Day

Pet Day 2014

On the 22nd of October 2014 Lake Brunner held its biannual Pet Day.

The weather held off for the outdoor animals so they didn’t get a soaking.

Lake Brunner students participated in some farming tabloids (which are fun outdoor games) which included:

  • Sack races

  • Gumboot throws

  • Wheel burrow races

  • Egg and spoon (which was actually a Jaffa and after you had finished the course you could eat your Jaffa)

  • Shoot the possum with darts (one of the more popular games to play)

Our school had great fun with all the animals including:

lambs, ponies, dogs, cats and many, many more animals!

We were awarded for our maintenance and our knowledge of our pets.

Check out some of these photos from Pet Day!
